Rudiger's current deal at Stamford Bridge expires in June, and he can directly negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs from January.
He was integral to Chelsea's Champions League win last season and has been a regular figure in their Premier League title hunt this term.
When asked for an update on Rudiger's contract situation, Tuchel acknowledged his importance but suggested Chelsea won't pay over the odds to tempt him to stay beyond next summer.
The Blues have uncharacteristically conceded eight goals in their last four games, slipping to third in the league behind Manchester City and Liverpool.
But Tuchel has played down talk that Rudiger's performance levels have dipped, despite resting him as Chelsea surrendered their Champions League Group H top spot at Zenit St. Petersburg.
Chelsea will look to return to winning ways as they host Leeds United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
Rudiger has returned to the starting line-up and will aim to return to form as his deal dilemma refuses to go away.
